Sidebar:--- The Internet knows no boundaries.  Dr. Wang's piece on "Insomnia" --- while not about nutrition--- still Dr. Wang's advice comes to us as "ripples" touching such unknown shores as my cousin Mike in Clearwater/St. Petersburg, FL and then on to his friend, Daveed in England.  Come learn of the amazing power of such "Ripples" as these.  Read on:---

What follows here below is a short series of e-mails between myself and my cousin, Mike Downey, and my friend, Dr. Hugh Wang advising us all on how to best combat INSOMNIA.  And his advice may well prove to be helpful to all who now read of it, but what is so amazing to what follows here are the "ripples' that Dr. Wang has sent to unknown shores, including my cousin, Mike, and his friend in England, Daveed.  Enjoy and reflect upon these "ripples" of which you now read--- for they have now touched you as well...

Bruce, I normally don't clutter my mind with computer e-mails just at bed time, but last night I made an exception to my rule, and read one, e-mail just as I was readying my mind and body for bed, at this point I had only 6 hours sleep since being home from the Hospital on Monday night. I read your e-mail. Gave it some heavy thought, then thinking of a new friend I have just made, a Jewish man, who lives in the south of England. He too has had problems of insomnia for years now, also he suffers with Headaches. So thinking of him, I forwarded your e-mail after deleting all e-mail address off it. I made him a note, to try reading it and see if it can help him clear his mind and give him a good nights rest too.
As I hit the send button, I must have fallen off to sleep in my computer chair, which is quite comfortable I might add.
I awoke this Morning in my bed, aprox. 9 hours after sending that e-mail. Some time during the night, my wife Sandy, found me asleep in my computer chair, walked me to my side of the bed, where she said I climbed into our new sleep number bed, and off to the land of Nod I went. My wife doesn't ever touch my computer, and I hers, except to do computer maintenance is the only time I touch her computer, So she left my computer on, with your e-mail and the embedded music playing all night long. From our bed room I can barely, hear it. But none the less, I awoke hearing a very low sound of the music coming from my computer room.
Feeling refreshed from a great nights sleep, I checked my e-mail, and from my new found friend Daveed, was an e-mail. He wrote: Mike, Headache gone, I have never had such a great nights sleep in years. Thanks for the e-mail and tips of sleep inducement, Signed,
 Daveed

So now I ask myself, what was it? Did I clear my mind? was it the soft music? or The ripples of time across the Atlantic?
Thank you,
Mike

Subject: Insomnia...and the "ripples" go out...again...thanks to our York '52 friend, Dr. Hugh Wang

After my cousin Mike Downey's operation on Monday of this week, he told me that he was having trouble falling asleep.  And so I asked our York '52 friend and my mentor, Dr. Hugh Wang--- a retired MD who now works 4-days a week as a shopping mall security guard so that he can walk his 12-18 miles a day and get paid for it--- for some advice to help Mike get some much needed sleep.

Hugh promptly responded with what for me was some really surprising advice on how best to combat insomnia.  I share with you all 'ratch hyar 'n nah'  what Dr. Wang has to say on this subject, should any of you ever encounter similar problems of your own from time to time.

Thanks, Hugh.  And your "ripples" continue to go to shores unknown.

Subject: Insomnia

Hi, Bruce & Mike:

Pain, disturbing thoughts, anxiety, uncomfortable sleeping positions,
a bad mattress, cold feet, and probably some other causes I can't
recall will keep you awake.

Here are some of my "tricks" for helping you fall asleep.

1-No caffeine, chocolate, or sugar (all stimulants)
 2-get comfortable
3-warm milk if you are not allergic or lactose intolerant or an
herbal non-caffeinated mildly sedating tea just before bedtime
4-a short soak (no more than 5 minutes) in a hot tub, Jacuzzi, or a
tub with warm water
5-Your mind cannot stand a blank, so you must fill it w/ busy work to
crowd out disturbing thoughts.
6-counting anything will not work because it is too easy and routine
7-Do these mental chores, do them all if you're still awake, and then
start all over.
8-Hopefully at some point you will fall asleep.  If you can remember
which one you ended at, start w/ that one the next night
9-Count backwards from 100, subtracting 7 each time.
 10-Recite the alphabet backwards.
11-Starting w/ Z visualize the letters doing funny things:
cartwheeling across the inside of your forehead like you're watching a screen
Lighting up like a neon sign blinking
A lighted arrow pointing to it like a motel sign
Going from lower case to upper case, from tiny to larger and larger
Falling into a pool, sparking and shorting out
      Use your imagination
12-Wash your imaginary car in exquisite detail: open the door, sit,
start, back the car out, turn the engine off, make sure all the
windows are up, wet the car,
Measure out soap in the cap of the jug, pour it into a bucket,
observe it trickling and spreading over the bottom
Pull out the hose to enough length to reach the back bumper and
opposite side of the car, wet the car, fill the bucket
Get the sponge, you get the drill.  Don't forget to wash the
car and dry it.  Polish it
13-Take a mental trip either to somewhere you really enjoyed or last
read about in a travel mag filling in the details.  Hear the sounds,
smell the smells, argue with the vendors.
14-Go back to a pleasant childhood scene.
15-Think of a really boring job you had, and do it (mentally, of
course).  Mowing the lawn might be an example.  Don't forget to fill
the gas tank or plug it in if it's electric.
Mow in different patterns.  Don't forget the finishing touches
like edging.
 16-Your turn

Subject: Of the "ripples" found at "The York '52 Weight Room"

Thank you for this Mike--- and such an interesting world we live in.  Hugh Wang speaks to me of "ripples"--- like when you try skipping a stone across the water.  You just never know what shores these "ripples" will touch.  In this case, Hugh Wang's "ripples" touched both of us "Downey boys" --- first you, Mike, while you were in the US Navy and then much later, me, your cousin Bruce--- both being Great, Great Grandsons of John and Emily Ellen Clarke Whitehead of "Raisins and Almonds---A Civil War Story" fame.

Could these "ripples" possibly be more than just a coincidence?

Hope you are feeling much better, Mike, after your recent hospitalization.

Subject: Re: Answers to your nutritional questions are always found at "The York '52 Weight Room" --- Just try me

Bruce,
I couldn't for the life of me get this guys name off my mind, and then it hit me like a ton of bricks. While I was stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. the Good Dr. Hugh Wang, was involved with a special project at The Naval Supply Center's, Research Division, where I was assigned to three years of much needed shore duty, after four years of 9 month long tours of Duty on Gun Ships to the Gun Line, in the Tonkin Gulf, North Vietnam.
I was not involved with him other than to pick up, he and other's assigned to him, and deliver them with my Boat him to Ford Island Naval Air Station. It was later declassified as to what was being studied, and that was the effects on our Navy Seal Team Divers and their Diets, for being submerged longer than normal human limits and underwater times.
Just a little Tid Bit.
